Hailing from Zorlock, Land of the Lost (three feet off the ground and to your right), the Japonize Elephants began their musical assault in Bloomington, Indiana in the year 1994. Over the past 11 years The Japonize Elephants have traveled the world, developing a superior brand of well-honed hardcore-gypsy-circusgrass-pirate-clown madness. They have documented this innovative musical genre in three albums released along the way (Bob's Bacon Barn-1996, La Fête du Cloune Pirate-1997, 40 Years of Our Family-2002). The ten-piece ensemble includes glockenspiel, junk percussion, and accordion, along with guitar, bass, flute, saxophone, trumpet, fiddle, banjo, and vocals. As you can imagine, their compositions veer from the symphonic to the chaotic. Blink and you’ll think you’re back in the orchestra of a French circus, with Mingus and Willie Nelson sitting in. Their songs fuse Appalachia with Romania, Vegas with Marrakesh. |

THE MITCH MARCUS QUINTET:
ENTROPIOUS (2001) Hard-hittin' bebop, Mingus-esque arrangements, and all original compositions. Together since 1999, members of the quintet converged in California from Oregon, Kentucky, Long Island, New York City, and France via Georgia, with graduates of the Indiana University School of Music in the mix. Saxophonists Sylvain Carton and Mitch Marcus, who have played together for eight years, are joined by bassist Lorenzo Farrell, drummer Ches Smith, and Chad Wagner on piano. In 2001, Entropious was recorded in Mitch's living room in Berkeley. Up-tempo tracks like "Runnin' down Ashby" and "Piece of Cake" contrast with more moody, melodic tunes like "S.S.Clagett" and the title track "Entropious." The Quintet is expecting to release a live recording in the near future. |

THE MMQ + 13 BIG BAND:
After receiving the 2004 Subito music award from the American Composer’s Forum, the Mitch Marcus Quintet was expanded to form this super-group. In conjunction with the release of their new album “The 50”, the MMQ + 13 Big Band performs new arrangements of the quintet material as well as other exploratory compositions stretching beyond the post-bop idiom. The group features works by collaborators Mitch Marcus, Sylvain Carton, and Ches Smith. Their arrangements and compositions experiment with dense harmony, polyrhythmic ideas, and altered song forms, bringing the spirit of the underground jazz scene into a traditional big band setting - juxtaposing improvisation with orchestration. “Mingus meets Prokofiev at a luncheon with Gunther Schüller hosted by Duke Ellington and 70’s cop show heroes Starsky and Hutch. Art Blakey is the chef.” |
